Lost Last Month

April 2007

In April, lots went lost: political figures (Boris Yeltsin, 76), national championships (the Ohio State Buckeyes to the Florida Gators), face (John Edwards's $400 haircut). But above all, the story commanding our attention, our bewilderment, and our deepest sympathies, was that of the Virginia Tech massacre.

The lives of 32 Virginia Tech students and faculty members, after 23-year old undergrad Seung-Hui Cho opened fire in two separate attacks. The first, occurring at 7 A.M. on the morning of April 16 at West Ambler Johnston Hall, a co-ed dormitory, claimed the lives of two people. The second happened two hours later at Norris Hall, an academic building. Cho chained the three main entrance doors shut and in the span of nine minutes 30 more people lay dead, the carnage ending only when he turned the gun on himself.
